My work is an organic
dialogue with clay and glaze, pertaining to the satire of daily
life. "Why does this teapot not pour?" The tea is invisible, but
the vessel which holds a deep spiritual connection to tea, and
the traditional tea ceremony, is visible. As my work is high
fired with the traditional Japanese glazes called "shino" with
wood ash, I find blending the ancient ways with modern satire
interesting and evocative. Creating forms from clay, the deep
connection to the earth, and adding in the fire and flux is my
Zen spiritual practice. The breath of the practice is forming
the clay with my bare hands and letting the clay lead me to
where it needs to go. I always let the clay lead me first.
